A guy who lost more than ₤ 250,000 through gambling stated he had "suffered in silence".

Taylor Hart, 32, put his first small bet when he was 14 years of ages on a football accumulator, where you choose groups and you get some cash if all of them win.

The gaming addict, from Dunstable in Bedfordshire, said that when he had won he was most likely hooked without realising it as he might not wait till the next week to get a brand-new football slip.

It was only in the early hours one morning about 15 years later on that he understood he had a gaming problem - and by then he had 72p in his savings account.

Hart stated he used to get ₤ 10 pocket money from his parents and "all of an unexpected I am getting a lot more cash by winning bets".

He stated with that income he "might not wait to do it again; it was such a terrific sensation".

From the age of 21, it started to end up being a larger problem when he began placing bets with higher stakes.

For the last 5 years of his betting life, horse racing was the only thing he would bank on, he said.

At 29 years old, he thought "this can not go on any longer" and he managed to discover a rehab centre through a charity called Gordon Moody.

He entered into rehabilitation on 13 November 2023 for a 14-week residential stay.

He explained it as "the finest decision I have actually ever made" and considering that coming out of rehab he said he had not put a single bet.

Hart said that it was only after going to Gordon Moody that he worked out he had actually lost more than ₤ 250,000.

He also understood he had actually been greatly targeted by betting marketing, which he referred to as "a real huge issue".

"You can not go anywhere without seeing betting, you can not listen to the radio without hearing gaming adverts, and you can't even get on a bus without seeing gaming adverts on the billboards," he included.

"I suffered in silence for a very long time where I was living from pay cheque to pay cheque and all my money went on betting.

"I was my gaming and I did not want anyone to know how much I was losing.

"That is when it ends up being a problem. It was not satisfying. It was sort of if I do not win this bet then the costs are not making money."

'Silent addiction'

With racing's Cheltenham Festival under method, Hart said possibly gamblers ought to think whether they have an issue if they identified themselves in what he was saying.

He said he had lost a lot of pals and family due to his betting as he was obtaining money off them.

He added: "If someone is taking drugs or drinking alcohol it is more obvious, however gaming is a silent dependency."

A spokesman for the Gambling Commission regulatory body stated there were "stringent guidelines governing the advertising of gambling ... which are designed to ensure that marketing interactions for gambling products are socially responsible, with particular regard to the requirement to secure kids, young persons under 18 and other susceptible persons from being hurt or made use of by marketing that features or promotes gaming".

They included that "targeted action around marketing and sponsorship is needed, specifically to better ensure that children and people who might be susceptible have significantly decreased exposure".
